Brief history of the burger
The popular burger (A unique sandwich) has its origin 100’s of years ago from the American state of Texas. It has traveled the world with many localized modifications and is probably the most recognized American food item gloabally. I’m sure all of you reading this in India would’ve had the extremely popular McAloo tikki burger at some point in your lives. It still is one of the most pocket friendly dishes on the McDonald’s menu. I’ve had it on countless occasions with friends in college when we were almost always short on cash, but still wanted to hang out 🙂 .
So with the lockdown in progress, when my niece wanted to have a McDonald ka burger, I had to bring out my Aloo Tikki Burger Recipe to please her.
How did McDonalds create the Aloo Tikki Burger?
Most burgers outside India are made using a meat based patty, but to cater to the taste buds of a large Vegetarian population, McDonalds localized their traditional recipe in many forms. It is believed that they picked veg patty inspiration from commonly consumed chaat in North India (Aloo tikki) and designed spice accompaniments packed in a bun with veggies! This is truly a simple yet very unique fusion that they’ve managed to create.
I have already started salivating thinking about that pleasant multidimensional experience where the sauce and bun just melt in your mouth and veggies and patty give it a unique crunch.
Why am I making the Aloo Tikki Burger recipe?
Burger has a lot of myths (yes I would call most of them as myths) associated with it on being unhealthy, fast junk food etc which sometimes demotivates you from having it, specially if you’re trying to lose some weight. But if we take it in right portion size and prepare it in a healthy way, it can be a guilt free addition to your meals.
Aloo Tikki Buger Recipe
The world famous burger was Indianized with McAloo Tikki Burger, I'm sharing the recipe to make the Aloo Tikki Burger at home easily
Ingredients
- Burger Buns
- Pizza/pasta sauce (this would replace Tomato Mayonnaise and has multiple application in my future recipes)
- Butter - 2-3 Spoons
- Onion (Medium size) - 2
- Tomato (Medium size -2
- Potatoes (Medium size) -4
- Capsicum - 1 (Chopped)
- Beans - 3-4 (Finely chopped)
- Boiled Peas - 1/4 cup
- Corn Flour - 1 Spoon
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - ¼ tea spoon
- Garam masala - ½ tea spoon (optional)
- Ketchup - 3-4 spoons
- Oil - to Grease Patty
Instructions
- Steam/cook Potatoes till they are soft.
- Mash them to make a smooth dough. Add chopped vegetables, corn flour, salt, black pepper and garam masala. Mix well to distribute the spices uniformly.
- Make small balls of the above dough and flatten them gently in a patty shape. Put them on a non stick flat pan or tawa (pregreased).
- Ensure that its completely cooked from both the sizes and has right color.
- Cut the burger bun from center in 2 parts.
- Apply butter and ketchup on one side and pasta/pizza spread on the other.
- Put patty and vegetables between both the cut bun parts.
- Now join them together and cook for few seconds in over or on non stick pan.
- Be careful to not overcook the buns. McDonalds doesn't cook the bun, but I recommend as it results in a uniformly warm end product.
Repeat with the rest of the buns and patty. Serve hot with Chips or any crunchy snack.
Notes
- McDonalds deep fries their Aloo tikki, but I suggest to avoid deep frying as it drastcially reduces the calorie count of the burger
- I have added Indian Spices and veggies in patty to add crunch and fiber.
- Peas and Beans are vegetarian source of protein to the patty.
- You can also top up your patty with a slice of cheese, it would add 50 calories to the total.
